Homework Policy

Homework is an essential part of schooling which focus on the purchasing, extending and consolidating of class work.  Homework establishes habits of study, concentration and self discipline which assist life long learning.

 Benefits Of Homework:

* To consolidate, extend and/or enrich school class programs.

* To reaffirm the roles of parents in education, strengthening home- school links.

* To provide training for students in planning and organising time.

* To develop students research skills.

Establish habits of study, concentration and self- discipline.

Types Of Homework:

Teachers will attempt to accommodate the following homework categories where appropriate to classroom programs and/or students needs.

* Practice exercises e.g. spelling, tables, reading, writing activities.

* Preparing activities e.g. researching, background reading, speech preparation.

* Extension assignments e.g. book review, making or designing, home research, projects.

General Principles:

Homework will:

* Be well organised, and teacher expectations to students and parents well communicated.

* Be set on a regular basis and establish a routine of home study.

* Take into account individual student needs and levels of ability.

* Be marked promptly and feedback given on a regular basis.

* Be considered of student’s commitments to sport, cultural and home responsibilities.

* Not disadvantaged students who do not have access to technology i.e. computer,  e-mail, internet.

 

Specific Guidelines:

* The Urunga Public School Homework policy will be outlined during the parent/ teacher information evenings in Term 1 of each year.

* Individual teacher homework expectations will be conveyed in writing to each parent early in Term 1.

* Teachers are responsible for implementing classroom merit structures to recognise the regular completion of homework.

* Homework should be general, not be set for weekends or holiday periods, unless first discussed and communicated to parents.

* Parents will be notified in writing by the classroom teacher if there is regular non- completion of homework.

* Parents should contact the class teacher in writing if homework is causing a problem and if tasks set are not completed due to other commitments.

* All homework should be initialled by a supervising adult.

* Parents and their children have the ultimate responsibility for the completion of homework. Parents who do wish their child to complete homework should notify the teacher in writing.

Extended absence From School:

* Family Holidays: Suggested work to include a written diary and regular reading. Maths text books and home reading material can be provided.

* Extended Illness: When requested, regular work will be sent home for completion under parent supervision.

 

NOTE: More value will be gained, if these exercises are adequately supervised by parents.

 

Non Completion Of Homework:

In consultation with Stage Managers, each teacher will implement classroom structures, considerate of individual student’s situation, to monitor homework completion. This will include those structures for completion at an alternative time, should this be deemed appropriate to the teacher’s management.
